About Appraisals

Did you know that a Replacement Value Appraisal is an important tool to determine proper coverage for all of your personal property - antique or contemporary - for Homeowners' and/or Tenants' Insurance? This could include furniture, carpets, light fixtures, silver and silverplate, glass and crystal, porcelain and pottery, paintings, sculpture, custom architectural features such as stained glass windows, and other fine collectibles. Some people even choose to document their entire wardrobe on an annual basis!

Did you know that a Fair Market Value Appraisal is important for use in the following situations:

  • Tax Deduction For Charitable Donation.
Required by the Internal Revenue Service to substantiate a charitable donation for which an amount of $5,000.00 or more is claimed as a tax deduction.
  • Probate.
To establish the value of a deceased's estate.
  • Division.
To establish the value of items for distribution to family members on the occasion of death, divorce, separation, or for gift taxes.
  • Depreciation.
To establish a value (BASIS) against which to calculate depreciation of property used in business for income tax deduction purposes.
  • Private Sale.
To establish a value to serve as a selling price between a private seller and a private buyer (not a dealer).

Appraisals document ones personal property in advance for evidence of size, kind, quality, and condition --- before the occurrence of damage, breakage, or theft. Appraisals are also a means to document information such as approximate age, origin of craftsmanship, style, and familial provenance of important family heirloom pieces. We perform single item appraisals or complete inventory listings, residential and commercial. Please note, however, that we are NOT appraisers for real property (real estate) or fine jewelry.

Did you know that it is unethical for an appraiser to charge you a fee which is set as a percentage of the appraised value of your item? That would be a built-in incentive to inappropriately inflate the value of the item. The appraisal rate PER HOUR for an antique still life painting should be the same rate as for a Picasso. (Appraisal costs may vary, however, based on the number of hours needed to substantiate authenticity or provenance.) On-line appraisals ASSUME that the information you provide about authenticity and provenance are correct; therefore, appraisal rates are consistent. Research on authenticity and provenance are only available through physical (in-home) appraisals and personal inspection of the items.

The Appraisal Standards Board (ASB) of The Appraisal Foundation develops, publishes, interprets, and amends the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) on behalf of appraisers and users of appraisal services. You can be assured our professional appraisals comply with all standards and codes of ethics of the American Society of Appraisers and USPAP.
